How to read an olive oil label

The year on the label

On Arzima labels, the year next to the price is the production and packing year, not the olive harvest year. When you compare labels, always check whether the year means harvest or packing.

Grade and batch code

The virgin or extra virgin grade should be set by testing that batch. The batch code links the label to the test sheet; with it you can request or look up that batch's sheet.

The bottle matters too

Glass is inert and gas-tight, but its light protection depends on its colour; clear glass is not recommended scientifically. Among plastics, PET performs best, especially grades with an oxygen barrier.

Storage after purchase

Keep the bottle in a dark, cool place away from the stove with the cap closed. A fridge is not needed; cold makes the oil cloudy and it clears again at room temperature.

Frequently asked

If olive oil turns cloudy in the cold, is it spoiled?

No. Cold makes the oil cloudy and it clears again at room temperature.
